Match Report: Dropmore C.C. vs. H.C. Trotters C.C. (40 overs)
Farnham Common Sports Club
Sunday 9th September 2012
Trotters Line Up: Ed Wolfenden (C); Mike Daniels; Andrew Freshney; Patrick Mellors; Charlie Radclyffe; Amitabh Sachdeva; Tommy Smith; James Wolfenden; John Wolfenden.
The late summer weather has gone some way to making up for the washout that decimated the early season fixtures and the sun was certainly beaming down on Farnham Common for this, our final scheduled fixture of the season. We had an enjoyable game against the recently reformed Dropmore last season and were looking forward to the rematch against our fellow ‘travelling’ team.
The toss was won by Dropmore and they elected to bat first. The Trotters took to the field with just 8 men, owing to some traffic issues, a ‘no show’ from Rich Lambert and an AWOL Stuart McCan - first round at the end of season do is on you, Stu! We were up to 9 by the 2nd over though and it was just as well, as the Dropmore opening bats looked confident and were playing some nice shots. That confidence was soon dented, however, as Mike Daniels’ pace sent the stumps flying, soon followed by a lovely catch from Tommy Smith off a Radclyffe ball. The opening pair had made just 11 runs, having initially looked as though they could have got many more. A great start for the Trotters.
Another lovely delivery from Mike Daniels saw off the 3rd batsman for single figures and the opening attack took a well-earned break with John Wolfenden and Pat Mellors stepping in. John kept things pretty tight, while Mellors took some time to find the length and line but did OK as the overs went on, with a couple of catches going begging. The trademark celebrations came pretty soon for John as he clean bowled one of Dropmore’s middle order on 31. Next up, Freshney and the Skipper, Ted Wolfenden, came in, with Andrew, in particular, proving very economical and being given a very generous LBW decision soon followed by a stumping from Smith. It was no less than Andrew deserved, giving away just 9 runs for his 7 overs. Excellent cricket.
John came back in for another few overs, taking a wicket maiden in the process before Radclyffe and Daniels returned to finish off their 8 overs. Another 2 wickets fell to Chas’s fearsome bowling and with a run out to round-off, Dropmore were all out for 126 after 32 overs.
It had been one of the Trotters’ better days with the ball, despite missing two players in the field.
There was some disquiet at the break, as it became apparent that there was no tea! A full inquiry is ongoing as to how such an oversight could have taken place, but the liquid refreshment and bar menu went a little way towards making up for it.
The batting was opened by Jumbo and Chas with Dropmore’s opening batsmen also opening their bowling and looking dangerous in the early exchanges. Just as Jumbo was starting to settle, he was caught in the 5th over for 8 runs, which was a great shame as this was looking like a strong partnership. Freshney stepped in, however, and picked up exactly where Jumbo had left off and he Chas put the runs on quicker than the scorers could get them in the book! It was a dominant display and the 50 mark was quickly passed by Chas, then the 100 partnership. With the target now comfortably in sight, but the 100 not going to be necessary on this occasion, Chas did a very sporting thing and retired on 70 just as he clobbered his 3rd six of the innings over the long on boundary.
In stepped Mellors to partner Freshney and after a few quick singles for Andrew and a boundary for Mellors, the winning runs were hit by Andrew (33 n.o.), courtesy of another four to put the Trotters on 129-2 (1 retiree) from 15 overs.
The early finish meant there was ample time to soak up what was left of the evening sunshine with pints in hand and enjoy the win. Credit to Dropmore, who were a relatively young side and were missing a few key players – they stuck to their task well and it is great to hear of other teams being formed and revived. We look forward to playing them again next year and for many more seasons to come.
Man of the Match: Undisputed MoM was Chas Radclyffe with a superb knock of 70 (ret’d) and bowling figures of 6.5–2–11-3. Well done!
Special Mentions: Tommy did excellently, as always, with the gloves earning a great catch and a stumping and Andrew and John also did brilliantly. The pace of Mike Daniels was also great to watch and he more than deserved his wickets.
Tea Score: Quite simply, ZERO.
Next up: This was our last scheduled match of the season, but there was talk of maybe seeing if we could squeeze another in next week. Keep an eye on the website for details.
Keep on Trotting!
